What is Blepharoplasty?
Blepharoplasty is the surgical correction of hooding in the upper eyelids and puffy bags under the eyes. It is best performed by eye surgeons who specialise in plastic surgery of the eyes (oculoplastics). The aim is to achieve an excellent aesthetic outcome to the lids whilst performing the safest possible surgery.
Lower eyelid bags develop over time as the tissues which normally keep the muscle and fat of the lower lids in place (septum) weakens and allow these tissues to bulge through.
The bulging fat can be carefully removed or redraped in the lower lid. There may also be skin changes as in the upper lids resulting in excessive baginess or festoons to the lower lids which can be removed.
Lower lid blepharoplasty is performed through a hidden incision from the inside of the lid or a small incision just under the lid, hidden in the natural laughter lines. Stitches are placed on the skin outside the lid if skin has been removed. Stitches are usually not required if the incision is on the inside of the lid.
Benefits of Blepharoplasty
- Reduces bulginess of the lower lid
- Improves lower lid position
- Can confer a more relaxed and youthful look
Upper and lower eyelids can be treated at the same time and the surgery can be performed under a local anaesthetic, with or without sedation or a general anaesthetic.
